Querer es Poder (Where There Is a Will, There Is a Way)

The historical, political, socio-economic, and racist development of the U.S.-Mexico borderland has produced an imagined barrier that, once physically and emblematically crossed, transfigures humans into negative identifications—into enemies of the nation. A place where promises and dreams unfold, are lost, or die. Querer es Poder (Where there is a will, there is a way) narrates the migration story of Juana Estrada Hernández’ family, who left Mexico to make the United States home. Through a series of prints, Estrada Hernández explores this process of migration with images that act as remnants of memories of this experience. The works interrogate the false promises, limitations, and contradictions of an “American Dream” and provide a personal look at the complexities surrounding the notion of “home.” “Home,” transcends geographical barriers in the ways immigrants carry the notion (and hope) of home on their backs—leaving all that they once knew behind and beginning a new journey into the unknown. Querer es Poder challenges what the borderlands represent in the hopes to facilitate conversations surrounding the current border crisis. Estrada Hernández’ prints offers an insight to the treasures that migrants hold on to when they move and the realities of being undocumented in a foreign country.

El desarrollo histórico, político, socioeconómico, y racista de la zona fronteriza de Estados Unidos y México ha producido una barrera imaginaria que cuando físicamente y emblematicamente lo cruza, transfigura humanos con identificaciones negativas—en enemigos de la nación. Es un lugar donde las promesas y sueños se revelan, se pierden, o mueren. Querer es Poder narra la historia migratoria de la familia de Juana Estrada Hernández, dejaron su país de México para convertir a los Estados Unidos en su nuevo hogar. A través de una serie de impresiones, Estrada Hernández explora el proceso de migración con imágenes que actúan como los restos de memorias de sus experiencias. Las obras interrogan las falsas promesas, limitaciones y contradicciones del “sueño Americano” y proporcionan una perspectiva personal que mira las complejidades de las nociones relacionadas con la idea de “hogar.” “Hogar” trasciende barreras geográficas de maneras que inmigrantes cargan con las nociones y las esperanzas de hogar sobre sus espaldas—dejando todo lo que ellos conocían para empezar una nueva trayectoria a lo desconocido. Querer es Poder reta lo que la zona fronteriza representa con la esperanza de facilitar las conversaciones sobre la crisis en la frontera.
